Our cover feature this issue is “The Kaiser’s Gamble”: an in-depth look at how Wilhelm II’s role influenced Germany’s unrestricted submarine warfare during WWI. Historian Larry Paterson unearths whether the Kaiser was really to blame for the Germans’ doomed U-boat strategy that ultimately led to their defeat.
Our main interviewee this month is Cuban-American veteran Colonel Johnny Lopez de la Cruz. To commemorate the the 60th anniversary of the Bay of Pigs Invasion, Lopez de la Cruz reveals his part in the American-led attempt to topple Fidel Castro in 1961. He recalls fighting with the CIA-sponsored “Brigade 2506”, escaping from captivity in Havana and even meeting President John F. Kennedy.
